'Artseption' is a project created and run by first year Massey University Music students. The aim of the project was to draw inspiration from alternative artistic mediums with the intention to compose 2 songs.

Each member of the group created their own piece of artwork based on the concept “Lockdown”.
With these artworks, we separated into two groups and swapped our art pieces to the opposing
group. Each member will reflect on the piece of art they were given and apply that concept to their chosen instrument.

Trees

the photo describes the difference between my expectations and the reality of the lockdown, with the greyer side representing the dark feelings I had going in and the more lush side describing the more positive outlook I had throughout the lockdown

Drawing inspiration from these expressions of creativity, we each applied our concept to our instrument, for instance, a dark and heavy image would inspire a dark minor progression etc.

THE MIXING SESSION (Jack using the amazing editing suite at Massey University, 13th October)

AND THE RESULT!

Track 1 'Lockdown'

Chris (Bass) , Stella (Drums) , Jack (Tech), Luishaan (Vocals/keys) and Sammy (lead Guitar).

Track 2 'Ground'

Alex (drums), Liam (bass/keys), Tayler (Vocals/Guitar), William (Didgeridoo)
and Reagan (Guitar/tech).

With this diverse group, we effectively collaborated in producing 2 recorded and mixed tracks within 5 weeks. We fulfilled a project where each member could have their voice heard without compromising their own individual tastes or wants. This project is an interesting approach to song writing because musicians often reflect on life experiences quietly and often in solitude. This project allowed a group of usually autonomous people to see things from other perspectives. We hope you’ve enjoyed watching our unique creative process in song writing and hope to inspire you to push the boundaries in your usual creative approaches.
